Technical Details

ALX.200 is the longest-range model in the Avioni ALX draw-wire family. It combines length measurement up to 20 metres with an integrated angle sensor in one enclosure, reducing wiring complexity, simplifying installation and improving system reliability compared with separate length and angle sensors. It is designed for simultaneous boom length and angle monitoring on mobile cranes, aerial work platforms, knuckle-boom cranes and applications requiring load moment indication (LMI).

Draw-Wire Length Measurement

Using draw-wire (cable encoder) principle, ALX.200 measures the payout of a steel cable mounted on the boom or telescopic arm to produce real-time length data. The 20-metre range provides sufficient capacity for long-boom mobile cranes and large aerial platforms. Length is transmitted over the CAN network at millimetre resolution. An optional cable reel supports neat cable storage and extended mechanical life in long-cable applications.

Integrated Angle Sensor

ALX.200 includes an integrated angle sensor for single-axis 0–360° measurement in vertical position. Angle range can be set via CAN message as 0–360° or -180° .. +180°; measurement direction can be configured clockwise or counter-clockwise. Angle resolution is 0.01° (0.00° – 359.99°) and can be set to 0.1° via CAN. Accuracy is ±0.1°. This performance delivers reliable boom angle data for LMI calculations and safety limit control.

Signal Processing and Filtering

Moving average and Kalman filters are applied against signal interference from vibration, wind and mechanical play. Length and angle data are transmitted stably and repeatably to the ECU or LMI software, minimising sudden jumps and false limit triggers.

CANopen Communication

ALX.200 transmits length and angle data over CANopen. Node-ID is adjustable from 1 to 127 (default: 1). Baud rate: 20, 50, 100, 125, 250, 500 kbps and 1 Mbps (default: 250 kbps). CAN message period can be 10 ms, 50 ms, 100 ms, 500 ms or 1000 ms (default: 100 ms). Heartbeat message uses 0x700 + Node-ID format. Optional redundant configuration is available for safety-critical applications.

Mechanical and Electrical Features

Full metal enclosure provides mechanical durability in harsh field conditions. IP65 protection class offers dust and water protection. Operating temperature is -40 °C to +85 °C. Supply is 8–35 V DC with reverse polarity, over-current, over-voltage and short-circuit protection as standard. Connection via M12 4-pin connector (male or female on request) or 3/5/10 m cable outlet.

System Integration

ALX.200 integrates directly with Avioni ECUs, HMI displays and LMI software. Boom length and angle are used together for load moment, outreach radius, hook height and safety limit calculations. Together with PL1000 load cells and 3X inclinometer sensors, a complete LMI solution can be built. During commissioning, Node-ID, baud rate, angle range, resolution and filter parameters can be configured via Javelin Suite and UCAN adapters; calibration and functional tests can be performed.

ALX Product Family

The ALX family scales by boom length: ALX.020 (2 m), ALX.050 (5 m), ALX.070 (7 m), ALX.150 (15 m) and ALX.200 (20 m). Compact models suit short-boom applications; ALX.150 and ALX.200 are preferred for long-boom cranes and aerial platforms.

Typical Applications

• Mobile crane boom length and angle monitoring
• Multi-segment arm tracking on knuckle-boom cranes
• Safety limit control on aerial work platforms (MEWP)
• Load moment indicator (LMI) systems
• Marine cranes and heavy-duty mobile equipment

ALX.200 is the top-tier solution in Avioni’s sensor portfolio, combining length and angle measurement in a single device.
